Do
you feel dragged down by the end of the day? Do you find yourself
slouching?
The discs in our spine create space between the vertebrae. During
our standing and waking hours, gravity pulls down on our bodies
compressing the discs. When we sleep at night, they get pumped up
again, with a new fluid supply.
Scar tissue
can grow and affect posture and mobility. Scar tissue can
be released through massage or Rolfing. Does scar tissue growing
around a joint or in other parts of the body as a result of an injury
or operation restrict your mobility? Seek out practitioners of deep
tissue massage or Rolfing (touch that can separate layers of fascia).
Over time they can break up scar tissue and restore lost or impeded
mobility.
Calcium
is an important mineral for our bodies. If we don't get enough from
the food we eat, calcium is leached from bones and teeth. Studies
have also shown it helps to shed pounds. Remember to add magnesium
and Vitamin D for proper absorption.
ARTHRITIS
- Research has shown that a regular program of cardiovascular exercise
and strength training leads to improvements in strength, function
and joint symptoms. Flexibility loss, muscle atrophy, weakness,
osteoporosis, pain, depression and fatigue responded favorably to
low-moderate intensity programs and helped with weight loss.
Large waistlines,
diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol account for
$4 of every $10 spent on prescriptions.
Bone Loss
- Beginning at age 50, we start shrinking permanently, as a result
of gradual compression and drying out or degeneration of the discs
cushioning the bones of our spinal column. We also lose bone
density as we age. Bone density tests are important for women over
50.
Food to Avoid:
Studies have shown a correlation between cola and bone loss.
Even diet soda has the same "sugar" effect on our bodies
as regular soda.
Suffering from acid reflux?
Are you using artificial sweeteners? Try eliminating the artificial
sweetener to see if it is causing your reflux.
Read labels and eliminate any products containing high
fructose corn syrup.
DID YOU KNOW?
1/2 cup of peanut oil has 1000 calories and 108 fat grams!!!!!
We are taller in the morning
than we are at night by as much as 3/4 of an inch!!!!!.
Drinking water keeps our
discs hydrated and prevents us from shrinking.

Slow
Movement with Awareness: Better than Exercise?
How you move
is as important as how much you move
Published in “Psychology
Today” July 6, 2010
"Cardiovascular exercise is now known
to be essential for health and well-being. If exercise is your only
form of movement, however, it is not a very balanced diet. There
is mounting evidence that slow movement, with body sense awareness,
has astounding health benefits by itself and in combination with
regular exercise routines.
According
to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, there are a growing
number of pain clinics and integrative medicine centers that offer
slow movement, awareness-based therapies (like hatha yoga and tai
chi) for pain in a wide variety of conditions including "pain
caused by cancer and cancer treatments, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia,
multiple sclerosis, and other diseases and conditions."
Throw
away the pills? Stop getting injections? Scrap the pain management
therapy groups? Stop the sweaty workouts? Maybe not entirely, but
regular slow movement classes are increasingly seen as having
essential "nutrients" for the body.
Compared
to a standard care control group, people with chronic low back pain
who took 12 weeks of hatha yoga classes had less pain and more mobility
and reported greater overall improvement in quality of life. Similarly,
12 weeks of tai chi has been shown to relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid
arthritis, including
less pain and stress, more body awareness
and more confidence in moving. A literature search on Google
scholar turned up many more studies like these.
Some
pain clinics have been sufficiently impressed with these findings
to fit some kind of slow movement practice into their treatment
protocols. But why do they work? It is difficult to argue that the
general benefits of cardiovascular exercise for health and well
being extend to slow and deliberate practices like hatha yoga and
tai chi. Some experts suggest that these slow methods instead increase
the parasympathetic relaxation response which in turn reduces the
stress response, promotes immune function that inhibits inflammation
and stimulates healing.
Cardiovascular
exercise with body sense has more benefits than exercising
while otherwise preoccupied. Interval
exercise, with frequent rest periods giving time to pay attention
to the body , has benefits over and above long workouts. Slow
movement is like Slow Food in which all acts related to eating -
shopping, preparing, ingesting, and digesting - are done with awareness
and presence.
NIA,
or Neuromuscular Integrative Action, developed by Debbie and
Carlos Rosas, is more active than the other practices mentioned
here. It combines a cardiovascular workout with movement awareness
and is done barefoot to music. NIA uses elements of tai chi, aikido,
modern dance, Feldenkrais, and yoga, among other methods. Using
the sounds and silences of music, students experience feeling the
sense of joy in movement in a way that encourages an embodied self-awareness
of agility, mobility, stability, flexibility, and strength. NIA
teachers encourage students to actively listen, feel, and observe
their bodies in motion. "

Obesity
is an epidemic
Every extra pound of weight translates to 4 pounds of extra impact
on our knees and feet. We are now looking at a generation of children
who will not outlive their parents because lifespans are shortening
due to the dis-eases that result from obesity. Research indicates
that soon heart attacks will be striking 16-18 year olds.
The good news is that we have to eat to lose weight; but we have
to eat properly. 71% of men are overweight, 61% of women and 33%
of children. Excess weight translates into shortening life expectancy
by 5 years.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION - too few hours - can cause hormonal changes that
lead to weight gain.
MORE MEDICATIONS - Antidepressants, anticonvulsants and steroid
hormones cause weight gain, either by water retention or increased
appetite.
OLDER BIRTH MOMS - Studies show an adolescent girl's risk of becoming
obese increases by 14% for every five-year increment in maternal
age. PRENATAL INFLUENCES - Overweight moms and those with gestational
diabetes have been linked with bigger babies
We
hear over and over about the importance of drinking water
and fluids to keep ourselves hydrated. Don't forget that fruits
and vegetables contain water, as well as tea and juices. Our bodies
need fluid to keep functioning properly, and one of these functions
is the health of the discs in our back. Dehydration will desiccate
or dry up the discs resulting in degeneration and loss of height.
Metabolic Syndrome
- what is it?
Do you have it? What can you do?
Various reports show at least 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 8 children
have it. Key causes are overeating and inactivity. The number
of people over 40 rose by more than 60% over the past 10 years.
Trying to lose
weight?
Are you eating enough?
Are you fueling your body before exercise with a combination of
protein and carbohydrate?
No body can effectively utilize calories on an empty stomach.
Eat something small before you exercise to trigger the release of
energy from your system. Breakfast is important. It is very hard
for your body to draw the fuel it needs to exercise from a depleted
glycogen source.
Do you put off
physical activity because you are too tired ?
Chances are you are not physically, but MENTALLY, tired. Surprise
yourself and see how refreshed you feel after a bit of activity.
A second wind can be retrieved by walking, going to the gym or
participating in a class: yoga, pilates, belly dance, Nia.
Movement automatically brings more oxygen into our bodies, it circulates
fresh energetic red blood and wakes up the brain. Join your friends
at our studio and have fun.
